Brief History
The name “Legon” means the mountain of knowledge in the Ga language which the locals referred to the prestigious University of Ghana located in the area. Legon is divided into North, East and West Legon. However, the biggest and popular amongst them is East Legon. Generally, Legon is noted for its sophisticated modern high-rise apartment blocks and detached houses; older buildings have been renovated to look very new. The area is sparsely populated and occupied mainly by high-income groups and foreigners. There are a number of offices and hotels. You can also find commercial vehicles trotros, buses and taxis connect East Legon to the city centre.

A & C Shopping Mall is located in East Legon. Ecole Française Jacques Prevert popularly called the French School, it is located in East Legon behind the GT Bank. It offers the standard French system curriculum for ages 3 to 14 years with certification equivalent of ‘O’ (Ordinary) level exams. University of Ghana is located on the northeast part of the Accra on the main Legon-Madina road. It is the premiere and largest university in Ghana with student population well over 40,000. It has faculty of Law, Engineering Sciences, Law, Science and Social Sciences. The medical school is in Korle Bu, with a teaching hospital and secondary campus in the city of Accra. It also has a graduate school of nuclear and allied sciences at the Ghana Atomic Energy Commission, making it one of the few universities on the Africa continent offering programmes in nuclear physics and nuclear engineering. Legon Botanical Gardens is a stunning, green, peaceful and serene a must-visit garden on a 25 hectares land opposite the Agbogba junction on the main Haatso road after the University of Ghana. The garden has an bar, restaurant, boat/canoe ride, horse ride and a kids playground.
