Brief History
This sparsely populated, quiet residential area is located about five minutes’ drive from the Kotoka International Airport and it is largely inhabited by elite Ghanaians and foreigners. It has numerous offices including those of international NGOs and many embassies are located there.
Housing is mostly in low-rise apartment blocks built during the colonial era and renovated to meet modern standards. Recently, there has been significant number of high-rise properties being developed. The roads are good and lined with trees, making the area feel breezy and cool. There is a reasonable number of schools, shops, hospitals and restaurants.
To the north is the Accra-Tema motorway, which is the only highway in the country, linking Accra to Tema. At the foot of this highway is the Tetteh Quarshie interchange, named after the man who imported cocoa from Fernando Po (now Bioko in today’s Equatorial Guinea) in the 1870s to Ghana.

Marina Mall is located in the basement of the new 3-level Marina Mall on Airport Bypass Road, just adjacent to the Holiday Inn Hotel. Max Mart Family Shopping Centre is a popular supermarket that also offers home stuff, electronics and other goods on three floors. The extension of MaxMart flagship store is under way: 1500 square meters of new space are added to the current 800 and will open to the public in Spring 2014. Koala Shopping Centre is off the main Patrice Lumumba road next the National Service Personnel office or the new First Atlantic Bank in Airport Residential Area.
